University of California, Irvine dancers and musicians will
participate in a multimedia Internet 2 collaboration with New York
University, titled Voyage of Aeneas: FIXED/NOT on Thursday, Nov. 21,
5-6 pm (PST) / 8-9 pm (EST) in the UCI Motion Capture Studio. This
production is the result of continuing research by Lisa Naugle, UCI
assistant professor of dance and technology, in the field of
telematic dance, which is the distribution of choreography over
various geographical locations using the Internet and other networked
systems. Naugle has been exploring the creative and technical
potential of telematic dance since 1996 and sees it as a new research
paradigm for the production, dissemination and recording of
computer-based techniques and cross-cultural exchange of dance and
media.

"Voyage of Aeneas: FIXED/NOT" explores a dialogue of music,
choreography, improvisation and abstract sound scapes. In this
performance, UCI will send video of dances choreographed by Naugle to
New York. Seven graduate students from the Dance Department were
selected to work with Naugle on the development of these works. In
addition, composers Norman Beede, Fred Bevilaqua, Jeff Ridenour and
Cuca Estevas, and actress Alexia Bevilaqua were invited to
collaborate on the project. Three of the music works involve
motion-tracking systems where dancers will influence the playback of
sound and text. At New York University, faculty, staff and students
from Music Technology, Dance and the Courant Institute of Mathematics
have been working on complementary themes toward the creation of
music and dance improvisation scores. Each location will send and
receive DVD quality audio and video over Internet 2 connections,
allowing for real-time music and dance interactions between the sites.
