CALL FOR PAPERS

Contemporary Traditions: Why People Dance Today
Proposals for papers on this theme are sought from dance writers and 
scholars throughout the hemisphere. Topics may include, but are not 
limited to, Defining Traditional Dance in the Contemporary World,
Tracking Changes in Traditional Forms, Contemporary Dance as Mating
Practice, Affirming Cultural Identity through Dance, Traditional Dance as
Creative Expression, Dancing to Stay Sane, Traditional Cultural and Social
Dance in Contemporary Environements, Carnival and Competition, The
Economics of a Life in Dance, Why Children Dance, Dance to Remember/Dance to
Forget, Translating Traditional Dances for Theater, Dance in the
Technological Age, Dance Fads and Manias, Watching People
Dance. We anticipate that specific contemporary expressions of dance and
practices will serve as points of departure for these papers.

Send an abstract under 500 words in length by November 15th, 2002 to:

The day-long symposium, along with a day of workshops and practica, 
precedes the WDA Americas Bi-annual Assembly, which will take place 
in San Domingo April 24-27.
