Communiqué
(International Dance and Technology)

The following note is a progress report from the newly formed Board of
Directors of IDAT.

Last year numerous letters were exchanged on the dance-tech list
discussing the widespread desire among members of the international
community to hold a new IDAT conference. After an open call for a
volunteer organization to step forward as conference/festival organizer
(in a country outside of the U.S.) did not meet with immediate success,
the debate continued, and many constructive proposals were heard in
supported of forming a more formal non-profit organisation which could
help to coordinate future conferences and events and function as an
active resource and service organization to our membership.

During a subsequent process of communications, an Ad Hoc committee
prepared nominations and elections of an interim Board of Directors. A
ballot was taken in October-November 2001, and five out of twelve
nominees were elected in a ballot (Johannes Birringer, Keitha Manning,
Lisa Naugle, Richard Povall, Scott Sutherland).

The interim Board proceeded to work on the preparations for the
incorporation of the new organization. Articles of Incorporation were
drawn up, and on June 24, 2002, the new IDAT was incorporated at the
State House in Texas. Its Mission Statement reads:

IDAT is an organization that examines and supports the integration
of dance and technology -- within creative process, traditional and
non-traditional performance, documentation, education, and research.

Goals:
* to sponsor/support international events to showcase exemplary or
innovative artistic, pedagogical, documentary, or research projects.

* to act as a dance-technology resource for the dance community.

* to support dance and technology practitioners in artistic and
educational communities

This week the Interim Board proceeded to elect its officers. Here are
the results:
Chair: Scott Sutherland
Treasurer: Richard Povall
Vice-Chair: Keitha Manning
Secretary: Lisa Naugle
Communications Director: Johannes Birringer

The Board is now in the process of ratifying the Bylaws and preparing
the application for 501 (c) 3 non-profit status of the organization,
which involves also drawing up a five-year budget plan of projected
activities and services, income and expenses. The Board is confident
that this process will be completed in the fall of 2002, and it will
involve a membership drive to generate income for the operating expenses
and the programming of our activities in the future. We will keep you
updated on this, and we also plan to design a new IDAT website which
will feature information about the organization, its membership, and
activities of the international dance/technology community.

We hope you all have had a productive year, and thank you for your
support in the formation of our new organization. We hope you will be
involved in its future activities.
