Technology and Aesthetics: Motion-capture and Movement

There are some spaces still available!!!!!

Dr. A. William Smith and the multimedia department of the Faculty of
Fine Arts [Ches Skinner, Dean] of the University of Lethbridge, Alberta,

Canada is pleased to present a 6-day motion-capture workshop for
aesthetic movement August 21-27, 2002. Public performances with the
artistic products of the workshop will occur on August 28-29, and
workshop work may be included in a traveling show.

Participants will learn about the types of motion-capture and get
hands-on experience with one of the world-leading optical systems. Each
participant will be able to capture motion data for a two-minute dance
that he/she will be able to perform (if the participant dances) during a

workshop session. If the participant doesn’t perform, there will be a
dancer[s] available who can create the movement data. Each participant
will then map their data on synthetic figure[s] of their choice in the
computer space, creating an aesthetic environment through mapping
textures and controlling the lighting and camera movement [within that
same alternative reality]. The result will be a dance animation that
will be shown at a showcase at the end of the workshop.

Participants should plan their solo choreography to include sound that
must be copyright free or to which the participant has written
permission to use, but composers will be available at the workshop at a
modest fee to provide custom music for the animations.

All participants would make their own travel arrangements to and from
Lethbridge. Lethbridge has an airport and most flights originate from
Calgary, Alberta. Lethbridge is one hour by car away from the Montana,
USA border and the famous Waterton National Park [the Canadian sister to

Glacier National Park]. Participants are also responsible for their
meals and lodging. The campus provides some food services.
