Dance Education and Technology: A Summer Intensive Course in Integrated
Technology for Dance Education at Arizona State University June 9
through
June 22, 2002
Description: Designed for the dance educator interested in exploring the
tools of instructional technology integration, Dance Education and
Technology covers a broad spectrum of methods and applications. This
intensive hands-on course looks at constructivist methods and strategies
for
bridging technology and dance education. Through new approaches
participants
will develop skills and acquire resources to utilize integrated dance
technology in their classrooms. Course projects are designed to
investigate
the creative processes enabled by new technology, to consider ways of
integrating these into the dance curriculum and to explore new
approaches to
teaching and learning dance with technology. No previous experience with
technology is necessary.
Integrated course contents include:
* Constructivist methods of applied technology
instruction;
* Digital imaging;
* Video shooting, editing, and compression techniques;
* Lifeforms: human animation software;
* CD-ROM and on-line resources; and
* Multimedia basics.
In order to support the physical needs of participants daily movement
classes will be integrated into the course.
Dates: June 9-22, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (includes weekends)
Academic Credit: This course is offered for three credit hours. Academic
transfer credit is available.
Cost: There is a fee of $450 that covers materials and the cost for ASU
summer school credit.

Facilities:
Dance Multimedia Learning Center:
The Department of Dance Multimedia Learning Center is designed to
encourage
the use of media and computer technology in dance education at Arizona
State
University. The facility is equipped with video editing, audio editing,
human movement modeling and interactive performance software.
Dance Studio:
The Dance Studio Theater is a 250-seat theater with a generous stage and
a
full complement of lighting and sound equipment. The space is equipped
with
Internet connectivity, video-based motion sensing as well as digital
video
and audio capabilities.
Faculty:
Mila Parrish Ph.D., Assistant Professor, is a dancer, choreographer and
educator active in the field of dance technology, K-12 interdisciplinary
curriculum and teacher training. Mila received an MA in Dance Education
from
Teachers College, Columbia University and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State
University in Art Education. Ms. Parrish has performed with modern,
ballet
and theatre companies, most notably, The Jean Erdman Theater of Dance,
with
whom she toured nationally. Her choreography has been presented at
various
NYC venues including DIA Center for the Arts, PS.122, the Morningside
Dance
Festival and St. Mark's Church. Mila is a Certified Movement Analyst
(CMA)
with research interest in dance cognition and multimedia development.
She
is nationally and internationally recognized for her work in educational
technology and CD-ROM development. Mila has taught at numerous
conferences
and recently gave a keynote address at the Physical Education Technology
Symposium in Hong Kong. Her article "Integrating Technology into the
Teaching and Learning of Dance" appeared in the recent issue of the
Journal
of Dance Education.
