"Songs of Sorrow, Songs of Hope", an innovative melding of dance, music and video commemorating the September 11 tragedy, will be performed on November 29 at 6:00 p.m. (PST) at University of California, Irvine, at the Winifred Smith Concert Hal, and simultaneously at New York University. This transcontinental performance will use television-quality video and audio over Internet 2 enabling each venue to receive sound and video in real time. The performance will feature dancers, musicians and video artists in NewYork and California interacting in a structured improvisational mix. The performance features the new Dance and Digital Performance Ensemble under the artistic direction of Lisa Naugle in the Department of Dance. For this performance, the participants created digital imagery to develop narratives for scenes throughout the performance work. One of the visual threads running through the NYU-UCI Internet 2 event is "The Machine Meeting Its Reflection", interactive digital video imagery created by video artist John Crawford in collaboration with the Ensemble. This piece consists of a number of short animation sequences that originated with video clips of the dancers taken in rehearsal. The resulting imagery will be projected simultaneously on stage at New York University, University of California, Irvine and on the Internet.
