"HELLO WORLD"
(& other monospaced fonts)

"The computer has turned us all into typists - even the dancers."

For those old enough to have programmed their own random poetry
generator in the days of the ZX Spectrum computer, this event should
bring back happy memories of green-screen gibberish. While for the rest
of us, there should be plenty going on to keep us in our seats for a
full 45 minutes. Combining dance, text, electronic audio and image
projection, ondoloop Ltd attempts to re-create the inner workings of a
poet's mind in their new multimedia performance event "Hello World (&
other monospaced fonts)".

Using a giant QWERTY keyboard and a range of electronic devices, two
dancers (Amy Johnson and Tara Hodgson) will perform the part of the
little men inside the poet's head to a backdrop of images created by
Hungarian video artist Andrea Schneemeier and sounds by Hull-based
electronic music duo Albert & Geoffrey. The dancers' movements over the
keyboard will trigger computer-generated texts that will be projected in
the same space using wordlists and sentence structures compiled by poet
Bill Griffiths from Seaham, County Durham. Local poet Brian Connell will
be providing the sound of the poet's voice.

This event takes place in two 45 min parts within the Live Arts Space of
the Ferens Art Gallery, Victoria Square, Hull on Saturday 24th November
2001. Part one will be performed at 3 pm and part two at 7 pm.

Funded by Yorkshire Arts through the Regional Arts Lottery Programme and
Kingston upon Hull City Council with additional support from the
facilities house LUMEN in Leeds.
