COSIGN 2001 Highlights I'd just like to follow up my recent posting on the upcoming COSIGN 2001 Conference, by pointing out some of its highlights for those working in the dance and technology field. We have a keynote presentation by Arthur Elsenaar and Remko Scha, who many of you will know from their presentation at SHIFTS 2000. Arthur and Remko's performance work involves using electric shocks to trigger muscle contraction. The other "must see" for those interested in dance and technology is the presentation and performance by Palindrome Intermedia Performance Group of their work "Seine hohle Form..." The rest of the conference will offer much of interest too. The other keynote speaker is Ken Purlin. Ken is a winner of Oscar for his groundbreaking work on computer rendering and his work on films such as Tron. His keynote presentation will be on one of his current main areas of interest - creating virtual characters with realistic and believable behaviour. People who have been impressed by the virtual environments such as Desert Rain will be interested in the numerous presentations that we have on the technology and aesthetics of interactive virtual environments. The digital artist Tamiko Thiel will be exhibiting and talking about her work, "Beyond Manzanaar", which explores the experiences of Japanese Americans interned during World War 2. Timothy Portlock will be likewise talking about and exhibiting his work, "Streams of Motion", which uses hand-drawn and black-and-white imagery to stunning effect. We have presentations by two of the artists shortlisted for this year's Electronic Literature Association award - Mez Breeze and Paul Chan. In addition to this, there are a number of papers covering the aesthetics of virtual environments of all kinds, the problems in producing interactive narratives, and so on. We have academic papers and posters from as far afield as the USA, Australia, Japan, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and the UK. Topics covered include: the aesthetics of virtual environments; the production of place in role-playing games; semiotic and non-semiotic MUD performance; literary theory and computer games; the design of interactive narratives; the mapping of movement to sound; web-based documentaries; the design of content management systems; montage; the semiotics of interface design; etc. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there.
