Not necessarily. If you set the exposure to capture the image of the 
dancer well, the background would still be not strong enough as the 
mini DV has a rather low signal to noise ratio, much lower than the 
human eye. Looks great on stage but bad on video. What really is 
necessary is to have an image in the back that has a luminosity value 
as close as possible to the luminosity of the subject in the 
foreground - for the camera. Whenever there is a big difference, 
there will be a problem. Therefore more powerful projector or less 
powerful side lighting.
