invites nominations and applications for the position of Director,
Institute for Studies in the Arts (ISA). As chief administrative
officer, the director will provide leadership and management for the
internationally known ISA.
The ISA is an interdisciplinary research center that supports
individual inquiry and collaboration among artists, scholars, and
technologists. Its vision is to invent new forms of art experience and
processes for creating and teaching the arts. Established in 1989, the
ISA has emerged as a dynamic presence in the small but growing number
of international interdisciplinary research centers. The ISA engages in
research initiatives with both resident and visiting artists supported
by a staff of artists, technologists, and creative environments
including a Media Lab, sound design studio, Intelligent
Stage/experimental dance space, Technology Development Studio, and
black box theatre. Recent artists in residence include Jim Campbell,
Toni Dove, Ralph Lemon, and Eduardo Kac.
Required qualifications include: A terminal degree in the arts or
distinguished record of accomplishment in teaching and/or
research/creative activity in one of the four fine arts disciplines
(art, dance, music or theatre) commensurate with an appointment as a
tenured full professor; and demonstrated experience in fiscal and
personnel management. The successful candidate will be responsible for
providing leadership for innovative research in the arts; managing
artists, technologists, support staff, and students in a creative
environment; building and maintaining positive relationships with
internal and external constituencies; and fiscal management and
development, as well as cultivation of collaborative ventures with
industry.
Preferred qualifications include demonstrated experience in
interdisciplinary research collaborations; a proven record of
successful experience with new forms in the arts that transcend
disciplinary boundaries; knowledge of current and emerging
possibilities for new expression in the arts and be philosophically
committed to creative research initiatives in a Research I university.

The position is a full-time, 12-month, administrative appointment with
faculty status. The preferred starting date is July 1, 2001.
Nomination and Application Deadline: The review of
applications will begin 15 February 2001. Applications and nominations
received after this initial deadline will be reviewed on a biweekly
cycle as necessary until the position is filled. Arizona State
