DEPARTMENT OF DANCE
SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS AND DANCE

POSITION: Full-time, tenure-track position in Dance Technology.
Beginning Spring 2001 or Fall 2001 (negotiable).

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor rank with salary range of $42,000
- $50,000, negotiable, depending upon qualifications and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership in the development of dance technology
support and interaction between our Tallahassee campus and an upcoming
program in Sarasota, Florida. Responsibilities will also include
continued instructional support for existing technologies used in
classes, designing and implementing future dance technology classes,
training faculty, staff, and students as needed in computer applications
and usage, acting as the departmental computer, network, and lab
administrator, as webmaster and designer of department sites, and as
videographer and editor for all major concerts. This position will
include travel between our two sites in Tallahassee and Sarasota.

QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or equivalent degree, or professional experience.
National reputation as a specialist in dance technology. A track record
of excellence in teaching, research and service. Commitment to
diversity and balance in the degree programs.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The Department of Dance offers three degrees:
the BFA, MFA and MA (to begin Fall, 2001). At the center of the Fine
Arts degrees is a strong commitment to the making and doing of dance,
i.e., performance and choreography. The department has long had a
reputation as a center for the creation, reconstruction and production
of outstanding dance repertory, ranging from traditional classical
choreography to contemporary, original works; there is an active and
ongoing program of guest artists who are invited each year for guest
residencies on our Tallahassee campus. Supporting these programs is a
computer laboratory which currently is used mainly for communications,
research, and Labanotation (LabanWriter). Software utilized includes
Final Cut Pro, Life Forms, Director, PhotoShop, Director Suite and
Premiere.

Future plans for our Sarasota program will be the establishment of a
working community of dancers led by an artistic director who will
rehearse, perform and tour classical modern through post-modern work
from our nationís master choreographer, mid-career choreographers, and
promising emerging choreographers. This program will function as a
center for the creation, reconstruction, performance and preservation of
the best of American concert dance. The Sarasota site will house the
most sophisticated dance technology equipment available so that the most
advanced preservation formats may be used. Possible opportunities in
distance-learning and interactive research between sites and around the
State of Florida may be a part of these plans.

The Department of Dance has a full-time faculty of 15 tenure-track
members; one 1/2 - time adjunct faculty, 4 professional staff (costumer,
production assistant, director of Music Resource Center for Dance,
publicist); and 3 clerical staff members. The department houses its own
Dance Theatre, with its full complement of electronic production
equipment. One of the curricular goals of the department is the linking
of theoretical and studio components. An example of this occurs in the
reconstruction of repertory in tandem with research in dance history.
As this position becomes established, additional support personnel may
be added.

The Department of Dance is one of five academic units within the School
of
Visual Arts and Dance (the others being Studio Art, Art History, Art
Education and Interior Design). FSU also has strong units in the other
arts: the School of Music and the School of Theatre.

Currently the enrollment of undergraduate BFA dance majors is 65 and
there are 12 MFA dance majors. Projected enrollment for the new MA
program is 20. It is projected that there will be 20-25 salaried,
certificate-seeking dancers at the Sarasota site.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin December 15,
2000. Applications will continue to be received until position is
filled.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Applications should include a letter from the
