FACULTY POSITION OPENING
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/DIRECTOR OF MUSIC IN DANCE
POSITION: Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure-related, appointment as
Director of Music in Dance beginning September 16, 2001.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D or D.M.A. in Music (or equivalent doctorate)
preferred, or Master's degree in Music. Significant dance accompaniment
experience and professional experience working with dance required.
University teaching experience required. Knowledge of audio production
for dance production required. Excellent pianistic skills required.
Ability to:
- oversee musical activities for all department concerts;
- accompany ballet and modern technique classes;
- teach undergraduate and graduate courses and individual projects in
Music for Dance, Dance Accompaniment, Fundamentals of Rhythm and other
dance related subjects;
- guide and direct student's creative work;
- supervise graduate student thesis work.

DUTIES: INSTRUCTION, ADMINISTRATION, AND RESEARCH.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and individual projects in
Music for Dance, Dance Accompaniment, Fundamentals of Rhythm and other
dance related subjects; advise undergraduate and graduate students;
accompany dance technique classes.
- Hire, supervise and schedule accompanists. Supervise maintenance of
audio-visual equipment. Serve as the department music resource person.
Establish and observe scheduled office hours. Serve on Department, School
and University committees.
- Conduct scholarly and/or creative research in the form of publication,
music composition, performance or choreography.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The University of Oregon was established in 1876 in the city of
Eugene, and has approximately 17,000 students. The Department of Dance is
in its 42nd year as a major program and joined the School of Music in
1992. The Department offers B.A., B.S., M.A. M.S. and M.F.A. degrees.
The Dance Department serves student populations of 700-800 students per
quarter in elective studio courses, 35-45 undergraduate majors, and 8-12
graduate students. Movement courses are housed in three spacious dance
studios and one multi-purpose gym for large classes in ballroom, African
and a variety of other world dance idioms.
Eugene is in the historical Willamette Valley, about an hour from
the Oregon coast and equally close to the Cascade Mountains to the east.
With a growing diversity of residents, the region also offers lovely parks
with miles of scenic bicycle paths, many along the banks of the Willamette
and McKenzie Rivers. A lively performing arts scene includes several
theatre organizations. The Hult Center for the Performing Arts houses a
symphony orchestra, opera company, and two resident dance companies,
Dance Theatre of Oregon and the Eugene Ballet Company, as well as an
active season of touring musical theatre companies.
SALARY: $32,500 with an excellent benefits package including employer
contributions to medical insurance and retirement funds.
