======= FUNCTION by MUNICIPAL CONSTRUCTIONS ==============

Friday 29 September and Saturday 30 September, 8-10pm, FREE

Bathe in the transforming power of light as Municipal Constructions plug into the electrical Function of a city in the disused Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road, Manchester.

At the top of a hill, a paper city is erected - three people quietly building a new town in the middle of nowhere. Using miles of cabling, an electric light display is erected by a mountaineer. Close by, an attendant rips reams of fabric sheeting, preparing to bandage the city's wounds before it bathes in the light. In the corridors, chambers and empty pools of the semi-derelict swimming baths, these actions are displayed using live performance, sound and video projection.

Set in an Edwardian creation of cleansing and bodily rehabilitation, Function examines the support mechanisms of a city, its physical upkeep, and the power of electric light to transform human interaction through the night. Supported by ever more technologically advanced systems, a city's streets and buildings are the scene of a constant surgery of maintenance. Cable and optical fibres insert themselves into existing arterial networks and the functioning city becomes a body bleeding with electrical signals..

Municipal Constructions specialise in site-specific multi-media performance. Creating delicate statements of urban experience, their work is best described as 'small gestures in grand spaces'. Examining the transformations that alter the city space overnight, they develop quiet spectacles, erected and gone within days. There work has been seen in disused spaces in Manchester, the Arnolfini and green room. This spring 2 and Counting saw a 360 degree moving freize projected inside the dome of Manchester's Central Library.
