Apologies for Cross-Postings

The Contemporary Arts Faculty at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
presents:
Intensities: Praxis and the Body.
A Symposium on Practice-Based Research
30.September-1.October, Alsager, Cheshire

Intensities provides a platform to share and discuss current
practice-as-research projects in the Performing/Live Arts. Postgraduate and
postdoctoral researchers working in and outside the UK will present and
discuss their work, its research rationale, its place in the academy, and its
effects on our disciplines. To secure your place, please register by the 15th
of September.

Dr. Lizbeth Goodman and Dr. Susan Melrose will give keynote papers to kick
off our days. These will be followed by paper/performance/presentations by
PhD candidates from a range of institutions. In order to open up our modes of
engagement beyond the traditional 20 minute paper format, each presenter is
given up to 45 minutes to address, and interact with, the audience. Thematic
continuity will be safeguarded, as everybody is invited to address the
following questions as part of their presentation:
- In what specific ways is this practice research?
- What implications for forms of knowledge emerge from this practice as
research?
- How does this work relate to the broader art world?

These keynotes and individual sessions will be framed by roundtables on
themes
such as 'Writing a practice-based research proposal', 'Postdoctoral careers'
(to be finalised, in line with delegates' interests). As you register for the
symposium, we ask you to put forward via email any issues that you would like
to see addressed during the two days.

There will be two performances on the Saturday evening.

- Due to the overwhelming interest in Intensities, we propose to offer the
cheapest rooms (£15) to unwaged people. We will also be able to house a

Other delegates can chose between the following options:

- We managed to secure a range of family rooms at a nearby Travel Lodge.
These rooms costs £20.00 per person, for 2 people sharing. If you decide to
opt for this, we can match you up with another delegate if required.

- Within walking and driving distance of the campus are a variety of B+Bs and
farms, and we can give you contacts for single (limited numbers), double and
twin rooms between £20-£22 per person. Please advise us if you would be happy
