You may have noticed that IDAT is missing from Johannes' list of
upcoming events. This is because The University of Surrey has
withdrawn from IDAT01, and at the moment there is no other
institution or organisation set to take on the event. It would be an
enormous shame to see IDAT disappear. Over the years it has just got
better and better, and Arizona set standards that will be hard to
match. On the other hand, maybe this is part of the end of the
ghettoisation - many mainstream festivals are beginning to take on
technologically challenging work, and other conferences are including
performance and technology issues. What do people think?

As the next IDAT is in the British court (no pun intended...), I'd
like to ask any European folks on the list if they would like to mail
to me (PLEASE SEND TO ME, r.povall@mdx.ac.uk, not the list):

* whether you have an interest in getting involved in the next IDAT's
organisation
* whether you have a specific thought about where it might be held
* whether your organisation/institution would have an interest in
hosting the event
* anything related!

Depending on the level of response, I'm willing to arrange a meeting
in London within the next month or two to see if we can look at the
options for the next IDAT in the UK. I have a strong preference for
London - for lots of reasons - but it certainly doesn't have to be.
More than anything else, we need a commitment from a large
institution who can back the event. I'm imagining we would be aiming
for at least spring 2002.

If there isn't much of a response to this, then I think we should
throw this wide open again to bids from anywhere in the world.

If you have general thoughts about this, please send them to the
list. If you want to respond specifically about expressing interest
in the UK IDAT, please mail me direct. I will undertake to collate
all those mailings and report back to the list.

Thanks,
