multimedia performances

I have a question on multimedia performances....

Wat kind of limitations are there for multi-media (multi-dimensional)
performances ??

For example space can be a limitation, easy to solve with projections
(even 3 D projections), or time, or making a certain atmosphere. But
with the new technologies I think there are hardly any limitations to
sensibalize (?)(making noticeable) any situation without having to
comment, or support by other media that shouldn't belong in that
situation (like for instance, text).

And, what limitations are there in the "oldfashioned" performance arts,
and how do people overcome these ? (for example making a jump in time
and space clear by noting that is it "1914, New York City") ?

I'd be very glad to receive a response...

Thanks for your attention..
